AOL to Discontinue Netscape Navigator

AOL to Discontinue Netscape NavigatorDec 30, `07 — The browser that helped kick-start the commercial web is to cease development because of lack of users. Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after February 01, 2008, the company has said.

Netscape’s usage dwindled with Microsoft’s entry into the browser business, and Netscape all but faded away following the birth of its open-source cousin, Firefox.

“While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser has been limited to a handful of engineers tasked with creating a skinned version of Firefox with a few extensions.” Netscape Director Tom Drapeau wrote in a blog entry Friday.

In recent years, Netscape has been little more than a repackaged version of the more popular Firefox, which commands about 10 percent of the Web browser market, with almost all of the rest going to Internet Explorer.

Browser Wars
Netscape was developed by Marc Andreessen, co-author of Mosaic, the first popular web browser. Mosaic was written while Mr Andreessen was a student at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois in 1992.

After graduation he set up Netscape Communications Corporation and began development of the Navigator browser. The first version was released in 1994.

It was quickly a success and dominated the browser market in the mid-1990s. But other companies followed its success, notably Microsoft, which bundled its Explorer software with its operating systems.

People will still be able to download and use the Netscape browser indefinitely, but AOL will stop releasing security and other updates on Feb 01, `08. Drapeau recommended that the small pool of Netscape users download Firefox instead.

Microsoft is expected to launch a new version of IE 8 in 2008, whilst the third version of Firefox, codenamed Minefield,  is currently available as a beta, or test version.

Opera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft with EU

Opera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft with EUOpera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft with EUOslo, Norway and Brussels, Belgium — Dec 13, ‘07 — Opera Software ASA filed a complaint with the European Commission yesterday against Microsoft.

The complaint alleges how Microsoft is abusing its dominant position by tying its browser, Internet Explorer, to the Windows operating system and by hindering interoperability by not following accepted Web standards.

Opera has requested the Commission to take the necessary actions to compel Microsoft to give consumers a real choice and to support open Web standards in Internet Explorer.

Opera requests the Commission to implement two remedies to Microsoft’s abusive actions. First, it requests the Commission to obligate Microsoft to unbundle Internet Explorer from Windows and/or carry alternative browsers pre-installed on the desktop.

Second, it asks the European Commission to require Microsoft to follow fundamental and open Web standards accepted by the Web-authoring communities. The complaint calls on Microsoft to adhere to its own public pronouncements to support these standards, instead of stifling them with its notorious “Embrace, Extend and Extinguish” strategy. Microsoft Dropping ‘Kill switch’ from Vista

Microsoft Dropping ‘Kill switch’ from VistaMicrosoft Dropping ‘Kill switch’ from VistaREDMOND, Wash — Dec 04, 2007 — As part of a comprehensive effort to address piracy of its products, Microsoft today announced that the company will increase efforts against piracy and outlined new steps being taken to protect Windows Vista from ongoing and known counterfeiting threats.

The upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) will include updates that target and disable two types of known exploits to the Windows Vista activation process. Also, as part of SP1, the company is making changes in how it differentiates user experiences for genuine and counterfeit systems based on feedback from customers and partners.

Microsoft is to withdraw an anti-piracy tool from Windows Vista, which disables the operating system when invoked, following customer complaints.

The so-called “kill switch” is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.

But the tool has suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled.

Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.

In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said:

“Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine. They won’t lose access to functionality or features, but it will be very clear to them that their copy of Window Vista is not genuine and they need to take action.”

Microsoft has described the new approach as a “change of tactics”. It said efforts to tackle piracy had seen numbers of fake copies of Vista at half the level of XP, the previous Windows operating system. The change will take effect with the release of Service Pack 1, a major update to Windows Vista. More at Microsoft.

Russian Hackers Hijack Search Results in Coordinated Web Attack

Russian Hackers Hijack Search Results in Coordinated Web AttackNov 29, ‘07 — BBC News is reporting on a huge campaign to poison web searches and trick people into visiting malicious websites has been thwarted.

“The booby-trapped websites came up in search results for search terms such as “Christmas gifts” and “hospice”. Windows users falling for the trick risked having their machine hijacked and personal information plundered.

The criminals poisoned search results using thousands of domains set up to convince search index software they were serious sources of information.

While computer security researchers have seen small-scale attempts to subvert search results before now, the sheer scale of this attack dwarfed all others. “This was fairly epic,” said Alex Eckelberry, head of Sunbelt Software - one of the firms that uncovered the attack.

Eckelberry said tens of thousands of domains, many based in China and only a couple of days old, were used in the vanguard of the attack.

Websites loaded on these domains were booby-trapped with malicious software that looked for vulnerabilities in copies of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer used to browse them. “If your machine was not fully patched you were going to get hosed,” said Eckelberry.

The criminals who bought the domains convinced Google, MSN and Yahoo they were good and popular sources of information, said Mr Eckelberry, by using comment spam on blogs to push the pages up the search index rankings.

He speculated that the campaign was being waged by the Russian Business Network - a hi-tech criminal gang known to favour web-based attacks.

But, said Eckelberry, this attack was likely to be a harbinger of many more. “This is not going to go away,” he said.” More at BBCNews.

Microsoft Releases Windows Live OneCare, All-in-One PC Care for Home and Small Business Networks

Microsoft Releases Windows Live OneCare, All-in-One PC Care for Home and Small Business NetworksREDMOND, Wash — Nov 15, ‘07 — Microsoft on Thursday officially released Windows Live OneCare 2.0, which has been in beta testing since July.

Windows Live OneCare is an online service that provides managed maintenance and security for consumers and small businesses. It offers protection from viruses, spyware, and phishing, helps with firewall settings, and coordinates system tune-ups and data backup.

“Customers have told us they want an all-in-one solution for PC care that is simple and easy to use across all the PCs in their home,” said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of Windows Live OneCare at Microsoft, in a statement. “Windows Live OneCare helps address this need by providing a comprehensive set of security and performance tools while adding new features, including multi-PC management, printer sharing support and centralized backup options.”

The service’s main new feature is the OneCare Circle, which links PCs together over a wireless connection to make them manageable from a single place. OneCare Circle allows, for example, a parent to see that a child has disabled the firewall on his or her PC and to turn it back on. It also helps centralize data backup by allowing a hard drive connected to any linked machine to serve the whole home network.

The service also includes the new Start Time Optimizer, which helps users load only the programs they require at startup, thus accelerating the startup process. In addition, it includes a “Proactive Fixes and Recommendations” feature to help optimize PC performance, and it helps maintain wireless networking security. More at Microsoft.

In a Move to Combat Piracy, Microsoft Signs Deal with Chinese PC Maker to Pre-Install Windows

MicrosoftBeijing, China — Nov 07, ‘07 – Microsoft and China’s No. 2 personal computer maker signed an agreement Wednesday to pre-install Microsoft’s Windows operating system in PCs to combat widespread Chinese product piracy.

The agreement with Founder Technology Group Corp. shows “the commitment of both companies to protect intellectual property rights,” the companies said in a joint statement. Founder also will sell Microsoft keyboards, Webcams and other hardware in more than 500 stores across China, the companies said.

“Our partnership with Founder is an essential part of our strategy here in China and around the world,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a signing ceremony. Founder President Qi Dongfeng, speaking at a news conference later, declined to say how much the Chinese company would pay Microsoft. Qi said Founder expects to pre-install Windows on nearly all its consumer PCs and about 40 percent of its business computers.

Ballmer did not take questions from reporters or mention piracy directly in his comments. China is the world’s leading source of illegally copied software, music and other goods. Foreign officials and business groups say the scale of piracy is growing despite increased Chinese enforcement.

Some 82 percent of software used in China last year was pirated, well above the Asian regional average of 55 percent, according to an industry group, the U.S.-based Business Software Alliance. More at FoxNews.
