AOL to Discontinue Netscape Navigator

AOL to Discontinue Netscape NavigatorDec 30, `07 — The browser that helped kick-start the commercial web is to cease development because of lack of users. Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after February 01, 2008, the company has said.

Netscape’s usage dwindled with Microsoft’s entry into the browser business, and Netscape all but faded away following the birth of its open-source cousin, Firefox.

“While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser has been limited to a handful of engineers tasked with creating a skinned version of Firefox with a few extensions.” Netscape Director Tom Drapeau wrote in a blog entry Friday.

In recent years, Netscape has been little more than a repackaged version of the more popular Firefox, which commands about 10 percent of the Web browser market, with almost all of the rest going to Internet Explorer.

Browser Wars
Netscape was developed by Marc Andreessen, co-author of Mosaic, the first popular web browser. Mosaic was written while Mr Andreessen was a student at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois in 1992.

After graduation he set up Netscape Communications Corporation and began development of the Navigator browser. The first version was released in 1994.

It was quickly a success and dominated the browser market in the mid-1990s. But other companies followed its success, notably Microsoft, which bundled its Explorer software with its operating systems.

People will still be able to download and use the Netscape browser indefinitely, but AOL will stop releasing security and other updates on Feb 01, `08. Drapeau recommended that the small pool of Netscape users download Firefox instead.

Microsoft is expected to launch a new version of IE 8 in 2008, whilst the third version of Firefox, codenamed Minefield,  is currently available as a beta, or test version.

Microsoft Releases Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate to Everyone

Microsoft Releases Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate to Everyone

On Tuesday, Dec 18, Microsoft has publicly released Service Pack 3 Release Candidate for Windows XP and is available at Microsoft here.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system.

What Is In Service Pack 3
Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases. For example, the service pack includes functionality previously released as updates, such as the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 and the Microsoft Core XML Services 6.0 (MSXML6).

Microsoft is not adding significant functionality from newer versions of Windows, such as Windows Vista, to Windows XP through XP SP3. For instance, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7, although Windows XP SP3 does include updates to both Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7, and it will update whichever version is installed on the computer.

One notable exception is that, SP3 does include Network Access Protection (NAP) to help organizations that use Windows XP to take advantage of new features in the Windows Server 2008 operating system.

More info about Internet Explorer 7 is available at Microsoft here. Knowledge Base article 936929 lists all other all Knowledge Base articles associated with updates that are included in Windows XP SP3.

Opera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft with EU

Opera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft with EUOpera Files Antitrust Complaint Against Microsoft with EUOslo, Norway and Brussels, Belgium — Dec 13, ‘07 — Opera Software ASA filed a complaint with the European Commission yesterday against Microsoft.

The complaint alleges how Microsoft is abusing its dominant position by tying its browser, Internet Explorer, to the Windows operating system and by hindering interoperability by not following accepted Web standards.

Opera has requested the Commission to take the necessary actions to compel Microsoft to give consumers a real choice and to support open Web standards in Internet Explorer.

Opera requests the Commission to implement two remedies to Microsoft’s abusive actions. First, it requests the Commission to obligate Microsoft to unbundle Internet Explorer from Windows and/or carry alternative browsers pre-installed on the desktop.

Second, it asks the European Commission to require Microsoft to follow fundamental and open Web standards accepted by the Web-authoring communities. The complaint calls on Microsoft to adhere to its own public pronouncements to support these standards, instead of stifling them with its notorious “Embrace, Extend and Extinguish” strategy. Microsoft Statement on Expanding Support for Low Cost Flash Based Computing Devices

Microsoft Statement on Expanding Support for Low Cost Flash Based Computing Devices

Microsoft Unlimited Potential Group has released a statement detailing the company’s efforts to expand flash-based Windows XP support in addition to Intel’s Classmate PC and ASUS’ Eee PC, as well as Microsoft’s plans to expand flash-based Windows XP support for low-cost hardware computing devices.

REDMOND, Wash — Dec 05, 2007 — As part of Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential effort to bring the benefits of technology to the next 5 billion people by transforming education, fostering local innovation, and enabling jobs and opportunity, Microsoft today announced plans to further expand flash-based Windows XP support for low-cost hardware computing devices.

This builds on the success of similar support for devices such as Intel Corporation’s Classmate PC and ASUS’ Eee PC, complementing Unlimited Potential’s focus on transforming education in emerging segments.

As part of this commitment, Microsoft plans to publish formal design guidelines early next year that will assist flash-based device manufacturers in designing machines that enable a high-quality Windows experience. In addition, there will be limited field trials in January 2008 of Windows XP for One Laptop per Child’s XO laptop. Microsoft’s goal is to provide a high-quality Windows experience on the XO device; if this is achieved, then Windows XP for the XO could be available as early as the second half of 2008.

Governments evaluating purchases of the XO should continue to consult with Microsoft regarding possible Windows XP availability date, pricing and support policies. In addition, there are no plans to offer a version of Windows that is compatible with the XO laptop for retail purchase in the U.S. and Canada.

Microsoft Unlimited Potential will continue to work with a variety of partners to support this emerging class of devices as part of its effort to help bring social and economic opportunity to the estimated 5 billion people who are not yet realizing the benefits of technology.

More information can be found at Microsoft.com/unlimitedpotential. A detailed background on Microsoft’s work to port Windows to the OLPC XO can be found at blogs.technet.com/jamesu. More at Microsoft.

Microsoft Dropping ‘Kill switch’ from Vista

Microsoft Dropping ‘Kill switch’ from VistaMicrosoft Dropping ‘Kill switch’ from VistaREDMOND, Wash — Dec 04, 2007 — As part of a comprehensive effort to address piracy of its products, Microsoft today announced that the company will increase efforts against piracy and outlined new steps being taken to protect Windows Vista from ongoing and known counterfeiting threats.

The upcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) will include updates that target and disable two types of known exploits to the Windows Vista activation process. Also, as part of SP1, the company is making changes in how it differentiates user experiences for genuine and counterfeit systems based on feedback from customers and partners.

Microsoft is to withdraw an anti-piracy tool from Windows Vista, which disables the operating system when invoked, following customer complaints.

The so-called “kill switch” is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.

But the tool has suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled.

Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software.

In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said:

“Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine. They won’t lose access to functionality or features, but it will be very clear to them that their copy of Window Vista is not genuine and they need to take action.”

Microsoft has described the new approach as a “change of tactics”. It said efforts to tackle piracy had seen numbers of fake copies of Vista at half the level of XP, the previous Windows operating system. The change will take effect with the release of Service Pack 1, a major update to Windows Vista. More at Microsoft.

Russian Hackers Hijack Search Results in Coordinated Web Attack

Russian Hackers Hijack Search Results in Coordinated Web AttackNov 29, ‘07 — BBC News is reporting on a huge campaign to poison web searches and trick people into visiting malicious websites has been thwarted.

“The booby-trapped websites came up in search results for search terms such as “Christmas gifts” and “hospice”. Windows users falling for the trick risked having their machine hijacked and personal information plundered.

The criminals poisoned search results using thousands of domains set up to convince search index software they were serious sources of information.

While computer security researchers have seen small-scale attempts to subvert search results before now, the sheer scale of this attack dwarfed all others. “This was fairly epic,” said Alex Eckelberry, head of Sunbelt Software - one of the firms that uncovered the attack.

Eckelberry said tens of thousands of domains, many based in China and only a couple of days old, were used in the vanguard of the attack.

Websites loaded on these domains were booby-trapped with malicious software that looked for vulnerabilities in copies of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer used to browse them. “If your machine was not fully patched you were going to get hosed,” said Eckelberry.

The criminals who bought the domains convinced Google, MSN and Yahoo they were good and popular sources of information, said Mr Eckelberry, by using comment spam on blogs to push the pages up the search index rankings.

He speculated that the campaign was being waged by the Russian Business Network - a hi-tech criminal gang known to favour web-based attacks.

But, said Eckelberry, this attack was likely to be a harbinger of many more. “This is not going to go away,” he said.” More at BBCNews.

Microsoft Releases Windows Live OneCare, All-in-One PC Care for Home and Small Business Networks

Microsoft Releases Windows Live OneCare, All-in-One PC Care for Home and Small Business NetworksREDMOND, Wash — Nov 15, ‘07 — Microsoft on Thursday officially released Windows Live OneCare 2.0, which has been in beta testing since July.

Windows Live OneCare is an online service that provides managed maintenance and security for consumers and small businesses. It offers protection from viruses, spyware, and phishing, helps with firewall settings, and coordinates system tune-ups and data backup.

“Customers have told us they want an all-in-one solution for PC care that is simple and easy to use across all the PCs in their home,” said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of Windows Live OneCare at Microsoft, in a statement. “Windows Live OneCare helps address this need by providing a comprehensive set of security and performance tools while adding new features, including multi-PC management, printer sharing support and centralized backup options.”

The service’s main new feature is the OneCare Circle, which links PCs together over a wireless connection to make them manageable from a single place. OneCare Circle allows, for example, a parent to see that a child has disabled the firewall on his or her PC and to turn it back on. It also helps centralize data backup by allowing a hard drive connected to any linked machine to serve the whole home network.

The service also includes the new Start Time Optimizer, which helps users load only the programs they require at startup, thus accelerating the startup process. In addition, it includes a “Proactive Fixes and Recommendations” feature to help optimize PC performance, and it helps maintain wireless networking security. More at Microsoft.

In a Move to Combat Piracy, Microsoft Signs Deal with Chinese PC Maker to Pre-Install Windows

MicrosoftBeijing, China — Nov 07, ‘07 – Microsoft and China’s No. 2 personal computer maker signed an agreement Wednesday to pre-install Microsoft’s Windows operating system in PCs to combat widespread Chinese product piracy.

The agreement with Founder Technology Group Corp. shows “the commitment of both companies to protect intellectual property rights,” the companies said in a joint statement. Founder also will sell Microsoft keyboards, Webcams and other hardware in more than 500 stores across China, the companies said.

“Our partnership with Founder is an essential part of our strategy here in China and around the world,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a signing ceremony. Founder President Qi Dongfeng, speaking at a news conference later, declined to say how much the Chinese company would pay Microsoft. Qi said Founder expects to pre-install Windows on nearly all its consumer PCs and about 40 percent of its business computers.

Ballmer did not take questions from reporters or mention piracy directly in his comments. China is the world’s leading source of illegally copied software, music and other goods. Foreign officials and business groups say the scale of piracy is growing despite increased Chinese enforcement.

Some 82 percent of software used in China last year was pirated, well above the Asian regional average of 55 percent, according to an industry group, the U.S.-based Business Software Alliance. More at FoxNews.

Microsoft 1Q Net Jumps 23% On Vista, Halo 3

MicrosoftMicrosoft Reports 27% Revenue Growth; Fastest First Quarter Since 1999.

REDMOND, Wash–October 25, 2007–Microsoft Corp. said first-quarter earnings rose 23 percent, exceeding analysts’ estimates, and raised its forecasts for this year on sales of the new versions of Windows, Office System and the “Halo 3” video game.

The company said net income increased to $4.29 billion, or 45 cents a share. Sales advanced 27 percent to $13.8 billion, beating projections by more than $1 billion.

Microsoft, the world’s biggest software maker, brought in $300 million in one week from “Halo 3″, the latest installment of its flagship shooter franchise, in its first week of sales after its Sept. 25 debut, double some analysts’ estimates.

More computer makers installed the pricier versions of the new Windows Vista program on their machines. Sales of Windows for personal computers jumped 25 percent and Xbox almost doubled, putting both units ahead of Microsoft’s forecasts in the first quarter.

The holiday quarter is a crucial one for Microsoft as it aims to spur adoption of new computers running its latest Windows Vista operating system. Its entertainment arm also counts on the December quarter generating twice as much revenue as any other quarter of the year.

Is MinWin, Next Windows / Windows 7, Dates Back to 2004?

Tag: Microsoft, TechLuver, Windows Vista, Windows XPJack @ 5:54 AM

MinWin Referring Microsoft Presentation Server Foundation Architecture Dated May 7 2004 - Slide 16MinWin Referring Microsoft Presentation Windows Virtualization Architecture Dated May 6 2005 - Slide 12MinWin Referring Microsoft Presentation Microsoft Virtual Server Overview and Roadmap Dated May 6 2005 - Slide 15MinWin Referring Microsoft Presentation Windows Virtualization Architecture Dated May 6 2005 - Slide 11In last few days many articles surfaced about MinWin aka Next Windows aka Windows 7 aka “Windows’ ‘Mini-Me’” aka “shaved down part of windows 7″, after a blogger Long Zheng posted a video on his blog “istartedsomething“. Here are excerpts from some the articles on the issue:

PCWorld Article titled “Microsoft Shows Shaved-Down Kernel For Next Windows OS” says, “The core code for Microsoft Corp.’s Windows OS is undergoing a rewrite to make it slimmer for use in a wide range of future products, including Windows 7, the OS that will succeed Vista. The internal project, code-named “MinWin,” is not being readied for a product just yet but will be part of Windows 7, said Eric Traut, a distinguished engineer, during a recent presentation at the University of Illinois. A video of his talk has been posted online.”

CNET’s News.com article titled “Windows gets a ‘Mini-Me’” says, “It’s rare that anyone at Microsoft talks publicly about Windows 7, the next version of Windows. It’s even rarer that anyone provides actual information about what might be inside the operating system, which is still in the planning stages. However, Microsoft has posted a video of a recent university lecture given by Distinguished Engineer Eric Traut in which he talks about, among other things, a new, slimmed down kernel known as MinWin that was created as part of the Windows 7 development process.”

InformationWeek article titled “Microsoft Wants Smaller Software Footprints Starting With Windows 7” says, “Acknowledging criticisms that the Windows operating system is “bloated,” a senior company official said the software maker has adopted a new, modular approach to OS development that will yield more streamlined products beginning with Windows 7 — a successor to Windows Vista that’s expected to be available some time in 2010.”

From all these articles, written by IT experts, it sounds like, with a video from Long Zheng of istartedsomething, MinWin became known / leaked to the world for the first-time, while I’ve found these three Powerpoint presentations from Microsoft linked to MinWin in some way dates back as early as May 7, 2004.

1. The earliest resentation, Windows Server Platform Strategy, refers MinWin as “Server Foundation Component” dates back to May 7, 2004.
2. This 2nd presentation, Windows Virtualization Architecture, refers MinWin as “a small footprint OS” dates back to May 6 2005.
3. And this final presentation, Microsoft Virtual Server:Overview and Roadmap, refers MinWin as a part of Windows Virtualization: Architecture also dates back to May 6 2005.

I’m by no means expert on Windows or anything but find it interesting that, if MinWin in these Microsoft presentations is the same, which now being referred as Next Windows / Windows 7, then it was out there wide open for anyone to see/read since May 2004.

Microsoft Drops Appeal of S.Korea Ruling

Microsoft LogoSouth Korean FlagSouth Korea Fair Trade CommissionMicrosoft has told a South Korean court it wants to drop its appeal against a landmark Korean Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) antitrust ruling. “Microsoft has sought to withdraw its appeal,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday. “We are working with the KFTC and the Seoul High Court, but because the matter is pending before the court we cannot comment further.”The Fair Trade Commission said it had been notified by the high court of Microsoft’s decision to drop its appeal. A spokesman said the commission was undecided on its next step. The commission ruled in 2005 that Microsoft had abused its dominant market position, fining it 32.5 billion won ($35.41 million) and ordering it to separate its instant messaging programme from the Windows operating system.

After the court rejected a stay while the software company challenged the ruling, Microsoft said in October 2006 that it had made changes to its Windows Vista operating system to meet all of the commission’s demands.
